Mega Man Derusting: Mega Man 4 (NES)

So I have a long history with the Mega Man games growing up. I came up with the Mega Man Derusting series to do such a task. The goal is to play and finish Mega Man 1-8, and possibly 9-11 later, along with Mega Man X1-4. I still have my Mega Man 1-4 carts and hadn’t really played them in years but I wanted to share my adventures on stream of relearning my way through the classic titles, and in some cases finish the later games to completion!

THE REVIEW: This was the last of the Mega Man classic games I had as a kid. I think I had gotten 1, 3, and 4 for Christmas various years and got 2 much later when I got into game collecting. I loved this one as much as the others, and the new mega buster was great! I was disappointed that the passwords didn’t save energy tanks either, and the game was rough to get through compared to the others. I never finished this one when I was younger cause i would get snagged up in Wily’s Castle with little weapon and energy left. Mega man 4 is also the start of the second NES trilogy where you fight your way through a villain’s castle, before fighting Dr Wily (again), which adds to the difficulty, and new gameplay elements and older ones changed are in 4-6 too.

GRAPHICS & SOUND: Capcom pumped things up with the graphics in this one, the backgrounds and enemies look more detailed. MM4 is where you start fighting larger mini-bosses in some of the levels, sometimes before a checkpoint. The larger mini-bosses like the hippos and snails look great! The effects for the weapons look great too, and being an anime fan, anytime I have the charged Pharaoh Shot above Mega Man’s head I think of Spirit Bombs from DBZ. XD

The sound effects are the same mostly as they’ve been in previous games, but the music is really good here. Try not to hum along to some of the tracks and the boss themes. Then again, there’s always a few tracks in the Mega Man games that someone falls in love with and can hum along to.

PLAY CONTROL: The new Mega Buster is used by holding down the fire button till Mega Man glows then releasing the charged shot. That may take getting used to if you’re coming off the previous titles where you would just rapidly pound the fire button to shoot. Aside from that, all the other weapons control as they do in the other games. The mega Buster can be used for stronger shots on a lot of enemies and mini-bosses and the Robot Masters. Mega Man still stops on a dime too, though there’s tough jumps which made require specific timing, or get hit by an enemy and use the seconds of invincibility to get past. The Rush Marine and Rush Jet don’t have the maneuverability as they did in MM3. When you jump on they just go straight to the right with little room to move. Least the Balloon and Wire Adapters are easy to use.

CHALLENGE: MM4 is one of the harder titles. The Robot Masters are tougher, not to mention some of the mini bosses in levels. MM4-6 are the games where you have to go through 2 castles to finish the game, making it longer. The final password only takes you to Dr. Cossack’s castle, not Wily’s. MM4’s passwords don’t save energy tanks like in MM3, so you gotta go farming prior to heading to Cossack’s (hint; you can get 3 in Skull man’s stage). All the Robot Masters have the usual weaknesses like the prior games in a rock-paper-scissors style, as do the bosses in the castles. Some enemies can inflict a lot of damage from their attacks or touching them, so you may find yourself retrying spots more often as not to waste life or Energy Tanks. Good thing is there’s spots to farm extra energy in some stages. Dive Man is a tough boss to crack, he’s a defensive tank like Snake Man in MM3, and attacks non-stop.
