Hack Showcase: Super Pitfall 30th Anniversary Edition (NES)

Hack Showcases and RPG Hack Showcases are a series where I show off various game and rpg hacks. I try to stick with hacks that improve gameplay or add quality of life features, completely or partially change the plot and characters, along with additional content, dialogue, graphical and sound improvements. Non-rpgs I try to give a full run to, or at least enough for a solid review. Rpgs I will stick with titles that have enough changes in the beginning to show off, and when I can, show parts later in the games where more differences appear. There may be spoilers in the reviews and videos. Some of these I may stream fully in the future or play on my own. Reviews are open to later revisions due to bug and content updates or me playing them and finding anything new I wish to bring up.

Super Pitfall 30th Anniversary Edition is a celebration and a rebuild of the NES game by Nesrocks. The game has been modernized from the graphics, a save feature, sound test, the controls and more!

  • Completely new graphics
  • Completely new Soundtrack
  • New menu screens
  • Improved game design (no more hidden items, warps are now doors, new in-game HUD, improved game controls, small level design adjustments, etc!)
  • Improved performance
  • Seamless, fully automatic save feature (please hold reset while shutting down when playing on a repro cartridge to avoid save file corruption).
  • Available languages: English and Portuguese (choose one of the patches in the zip)
  • Many more small improvements!

SO HOW IS IT? This hack is amazing! It’s Super Pitfall for the NES rebuilt from the ground up and it looks and plays wonderfully! The modernize graphics and new soundtrack compliment each other beautifully and it doesn’t just feel like the same old game with a new coat of paint. Nesrocks took the engine out for Super Pitfall and rebuilt it from the ground up like a street racer would rebuild a lemon into a racing machine. The graphics are cute, bright, and large from Pitfall Harry himself to the enemies you face in the caverns and the giant Moai statues! All of the backgrounds look terrific and really feel like you’re traveling deeper and deeper into the unknown and the Dark World has a very creepy vibe to it. The music is really good and doesn’t just sound like annoying bells and whistles and sampling the entire soundtrack in the sound test is a festival for your ears. Each track feels appropriate for where it’s played in the game.

The game still plays out like the vanilla Super Pitfall: find a gun, get the medicine, save your niece, get the key and save your mountain lion buddy, get to your jeep and go home. A nice touch is that the gun has unlimited bullets now so you don’t have to worry about wasting ammo. You can still only kill enemies that are at your height along with flying enemies. Harry can’t crouch so enemies like bugs still have to be jumped over. Thankfully Harry has no issues with stopping on a dime for precise jumps to catch vines, avoid spikes and lava pits.

One the best features of this is the saving feature that remembers where you left off getting treasure bars, the keys for the hidden doors and the treasures needed to finish the game. You also start with 5 lives instead of 3 like in the original and extra lives are still scattered among the ruins. Restarting from a save brings you back to the start, but you still have everything you had before, selecting the “Story and progress” option tells you the game’s story and how many of the treasures you obtained to finish the game.

Nesrocks knocked it out of the ballpark with this, not just giving Super Pitfall a fresh coat of paint, but gutting the beast and renovating it. I’m going to want to revisit this sometime with the maps of the 3 areas and a better walkthrough.

I GIVE SUPER PITFALL 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION 5 OUT OF 5 GOLD BARS!!
