Hack Showcase: Sonic Classic Heroes (Genesis)

Hack Showcases and RPG Hack Showcases are a series where I show off various game and rpg hacks. I try to stick with hacks that improve gameplay or add quality of life features, completely or partially change the plot and characters, along with additional content, dialogue, graphical and sound improvements. Non-rpgs I try to give a full run to, or at least enough for a solid review. Rpgs I will stick with titles that have enough changes in the beginning to show off, and when I can, show parts later in the games where more differences appear. There may be spoilers in the reviews and videos. Some of these I may stream fully in the future or play on my own. Reviews are open to later revisions due to bug and content updates or me playing them and finding anything new I wish to bring up.

Sonic Classic Heroes is a collaboration hack between flamewing and ColinC10, which combines their respective Sonic 2 heroes and Sonic 1 & 2 hack. Sonic Classic heroes features the games Sonic 1 & 2 with Team Sonic consisting of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and Team Chaotix with Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy the Bee, all characters from Knuckles Chaotix for the Sega 32x. Gameplay is built on the Sonic 2 engine and also features SRAM capabilities for saving your progress, a stage select for both games, Team Chaotix mode, and a feature to go through all the Chaos Emerald bonus stages of Sonic 1 and 2. Gameplay consists of controlling 1 character from your team, while the cpu controls the other 2 and you can switch between them at any time, or play with only 2 members of a team or go at it solo. Game also includes the elemental shields and uses physics from Sonic 3. Finishing Sonic 1 leads right into Sonic 2 after a brief cutscene.

Also worth noting the download of the latest version as on Jan 4, 2022 from the Sonic Retro forums has a full color pdf manual for download with the plot, controls for a 3 or 6-button controller and more!

SO HOW IS IT? WOW, Flamewing and ColinC10 did an amazing job with this! Both teams play and react great in Sonic 1 and 2 with few issues, even the special stages! The Ai is about as good as the later Sonic games when you have tails following you, though they can do dumb moves here and there, but nothing game breaking. There are some glitches here and there where your teammates won’t move and get stuck behind an object so you have to switch to that teammate to proceed. Sometimes the game won’t proceed with certain teammates, the teammate issues seem to be mostly with Team Chaotix than with Team Sonic. All 3 members of your teams each have their own attack and special moves. Added to your arsenal are some moves from the later 2-D Sonic games like the Elemental Shields from Sonic 3. For example switching to Knuckles for Team Sonic you can climb and glide over a good portion of some stages like Marble Hill Zone in Sonic 1. Playing through the combined Sonic 1 & 2 game you can get the Emeralds in the Sonic 1 and 2 bonus stages the way you would in the vanilla games after getting 50 rings: giant ring at the end of levels in 1, jumping through the ring after hitting a signpost in 2. Of course getting all the Emeralds you can go into Hyper mode and smash your way through everyone and everything!

Saving is automatic as your proceed and your progress, lives and Chaos and Sol Emeralds (what are those anyway?) are saved. Starting a new game you can pick to go through both Sonic 1 and 2, or just one of the games, pick your team, and even pick if you want all 3 teammates, 2 of them, or only 1 member. Want to just play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, go for it! Playing through Sonic 1 and 2 is like playing one long game, and the transition from Sonic 1 into 2 is done via a cutscene added to the actual ending for Sonic 1 (all Emeralds or not). Sonic 2’s ending plays out like normal.

Also added to this is Chaotix Mode from Knuckles Chaotix where your team is stuck together by golden ropes and you’ll need each member to proceed. I’m not a big fan of this or know entirely how it works, seeing how I never played Knuckles Chaotix before playing this hack. Might be something I need to sit down with later.

In conclusion, this hack is highly recommended! Playing through Sonic 1 and 2 or just one of them is a lot of fun with either team, the gameplay balance is great and doesn’t feel any harder or easier from the vanilla games. Team Chaotix has a lot of personally too! As before mentioned, there is some gameplay issues and jank when proceeding with your teams, and it’s more apparent with Team Chaotix than Team Sonic.

I GIVE SONIC CLASSIC HEROES 4.5 OUT OF 5 RINGS!!
