Hack Showcase: Celeste Mario’s Zap & Dash (NES)

Hack Showcases and RPG Hack Showcases are a series where I show off various game and rpg hacks. I try to stick with hacks that improve gameplay or add quality of life features, completely or partially change the plot and characters, along with additional content, dialogue, graphical and sound improvements. Non-rpgs I try to give a full run to, or at least enough for a solid review. Rpgs I will stick with titles that have enough changes in the beginning to show off, and when I can, show parts later in the games where more differences appear. There may be spoilers in the reviews and videos. Some of these I may stream fully in the future or play on my own. Reviews are open to later revisions due to bug and content updates or me playing them and finding anything new I wish to bring up.

Celeste Mario is a hack made in the span of 2 months by w7n. This hack completely changes Super Mario Bros gameplay into that of the PC game Celeste, where you have to dash and jump in different ways to collect items and solve puzzles to progress. Mario is there along with other stuff from SMB! Every few rooms you can save and failing to solve a room doesn’t mean game over cause you have unlimited tries to succeed!

SO HOW IS IT? w7n did an AMAZING job with this  rebuilding SMB into this hack in a timeframe of under 2 months! The entire game is rebuilt from the ground up with the game play and action-puzzler(?) aspect of Celestie. Only elements left from standard SMB is Mario and some of the enemies and items. You’ll travel through different rooms in the maze, trying to figure the puzzle out by jumping, triggering Thomps, activating switches, avoiding spikes, air-dashing and more. Each room has its own puzzle elements and many of the skills you learn in a room from Info Blocks builds into later rooms. Game can be frustrating trying to figure it out, slowly piecing things to get from A to B to C. Thankfully you have unlimited lives and in some cases you’ll respawn around in the larger rooms where you die. This, like Celestie, is gonna be full of “AH- HA!” moments when you piece everything together and figure out what the game wants you to do, even if you don’t see the correct solution right away. Oh the game has a death counter too. XD

There are saves every few rooms and you can warp back to previous saves if you’re deep in a section and need or want to save. Different items will enable new abilities like the air-dash, wall gripping, and even using objects in a room to defeat enemies, trigger TNT blocks or floating. Finding Moons along the maze will give you more dashing abilities permanently.

Graphics are beautiful for as minimal as they are with mostly black backgrounds, mario really stands out against it as do the obstacles in your paths. Music isn’t from SMB but all different! it’s actually kinda whimsical and relaxing with how stressful this game can be at times!

I’m not a big Celestie fan and of this style, but I had a lot of fun with this and do recommend it. If I had to take any points off it would be the difficulty since many rooms can be rough to figure out and manipulating the controls to dash or jump correctly. Give this a run!

I GIVE CELESTE MARIO’S ZAP & DASH 4.5 OUT OF 5 MOONS!!
