Hack Showcase: Batman (Easy) and Batman: The Dark Knight Hacks (NES)

Hack Showcases and RPG Hack Showcases are a series where I show off various game and rpg hacks. I try to stick with hacks that improve gameplay or add quality of life features, completely or partially change the plot and characters, along with additional content, dialogue, graphical and sound improvements. Non-rpgs I try to give a full run to, or at least enough for a solid review. Rpgs I will stick with titles that have enough changes in the beginning to show off, and when I can, show parts later in the games where more differences appear. There may be spoilers in the reviews and videos. Some of these I may stream fully in the future or play on my own. Reviews are open to later revisions due to bug and content updates or me playing them and finding anything new I wish to bring up.

I decided to give a couple NES Batman hacks a try: the Easy hack of NES Batman and The Dark Knight hack on stream one night. Finished both to completion and decided to give my thoughts on them. Gameplay video and links to both at end of review.

BATMAN (EASY) HACK: This hack makes Sunsoft’s NES Batman less of a chore to play between going through levels and fighting bosses. The levels are redesigned in a way that there’s multiple paths to progress to the next one or a boss fight. I was really happy to play through some of the levels and find additional platforms and less traps to take damage when I had to jump places or those long wall jumping portions in some levels.

Enemies still pretty much act the same, but there’s less in some sports where you have to do the wall jumping portions, and again, less places to take damage in those portions making you rethink how and where to wall jump. Powerups give you 20 ammo instead of 10, and hearts fully restore your health too.

The other big change is the way bosses are fought. Boss difficulty was toned down quite a bit so you can punch your way through them easier. Especially with the final 2 Firebug and Joker. Joker isn’t a bullet sponge and take a few good punches to the face to defeat so Batman can throw him off the Cathedral tower.

I do recommend this one if you had trouble with NES Batman, or you just want an easier run through this hard, but excellent Sunsoft title. I also stream this using the Batman Color Fix hack, which changes Batman from purple and black to his more traditional black and gray, and his face is more defined too.
