Retrorevisited: Mario Kart (snes, gba, n64)

Retrorevisited is a stream series where I revisit a game or a game series I haven’t played in over 10 or 20+ years. I’ll go through to try see what I remember until a game over or I run out of continues. In some cases muscle memory may slowly return, in others probably not. This is a chance for me to revisit games of my youth that I still have or had at one point, playing them with and without nostalgia goggles, and do with mini-reviews of them too. If I decide to play any fully later and do a full review, parts of the mini-review would be incorporated into it. Depending on the playstyle or system, games reviewed will either be mini-reviews or one about all games in this session.

The Mario Kart series has been a long running popular series since the first game was released for the SNES. Since then there’s been a Mario Kart game for every Nintendo system, with various improvements to gameplay, racers, power-ups, tracks and more. Series is so popular it started the “kart racing” genre!

For this edition of Retrorevisited, I started with the SNES Super Mario Kart, then tried out for the first time the GBA edition and finished with the n64 Mario Kart, which is the one i have the most experience with. GameCube was supposed to be a 4th title, but it didn’t work well while streaming so I had to drop it. I played as Luigi (my fav!) and did Mushroom and Flower Cup runs in all 3 games.

SUPER MARIO KART SNES: The first of the series still holds up! The graphics are the old chibi style which could be a turn off, but the gameplay and soundtrack holds up! Being the first, this game didn’t start refining any of the mechanics as the later games did. This one is down and dirt kart racing at its finest and a fun multiplayer option. The split screen could make it hard to see where you and the other drivers are, especially on split screens. 4 OUT OF 5 KARTS!

MARIO KART SUPER CIRCUIT GBA: This one took the best of the SNES and N64 titles and smooshed them into a GBA cart. I’m not that big a fan of this one and I can’t really explain it. The graphics and soundtrack hold up, though the game suffers with the washed out colors due to the lack of a GBA backlight. Interesting courses too. The gameplay is still the same but feels a bit jankier than the SNES edition. 3.5 OUT OF 5 KARTS!

MARIO KART 64 N64:   This one is the first Mario Kart I really owned and I still love it to this day! The really pushes the limits of the N64 in terms of gameplay, graphics and the speed the game runs on. The graphics aren’t the older chibi style anymore and the more lifelike but cartoony look of Mario and the gang. The soundtrack still rocks and the track selections are great. Some new weapons and abilities came out for this one and I could play this one for hours! Maybe one day I’ll try to finish a full round of racing Cups. 4 OUT OF 5 KARTS!
