RPG Hack Showcase: Final Fantasy 6 T-Edition (SNES)

Hack Showcases and RPG Hack Showcases are a series where I show off various game and rpg hacks. I try to stick with hacks that improve gameplay or add quality of life features, completely or partially change the plot and characters, along with additional content, dialogue, graphical and sound improvements. Non-rpgs I try to give a full run to, or at least enough for a solid review. Rpgs I will stick with titles that have enough changes in the beginning to show off, and when I can, show parts later in the games where more differences appear. There may be spoilers in the reviews and videos. Some of these I may stream fully in the future or play on my own. Reviews are open to later revisions due to bug and content updates or me playing them and finding anything new I wish to bring up.

FF6 T-Edition translated is a long waited hack finally translated by Tomato of FFC2 fame. This is a lengthy harder hack of FF6 with a lot of new features, things to do, quality of life changes and more!

  • Retains the original story, but adds a LOT of new content *around* the main story, including side quests, locations, dungeons, super-bosses, unlockable character costumes (each with stat changes), a music player, and more
  • Celebrates the Final Fantasy series in countless ways, including hundreds of pieces of music from other games in the series
  • Updates the game’s mechanics with bug fixes, difficulty modifications, new spells, new attacks, new items, and a whole lot more

The hack also comes with EX Mode, which adds even more post-game content, superbosses and things to do! Big thanks to my buddy Chris474 for helping me get the save files together for the Hack Showcase video and this review.

With most romhacks, strongly suggested to check out the readme files for advice on the changes to hacks and any gameplay tips, especially with rpgs. Readme files for rpg hacks can contain additional gameplay advice, etc, and it’s worth subscribing to hacks you like on RHDN to keep up with updates for bug fixes, additional content, etc.

SO HOW IS IT? All I gotta say is WOW! There is a lot to cover with this review for changes from gameplay balancing, quality of life stuff, new content and more!  For starters all your heroes actually have  class along with their names and some characters had their special abilities rebuilt. Cyan does his samurai stuff faster, and Gau is rebuilt so he learns his rage attacks from enemies on and off the Veldt! You only get 1 attack per enemy rage in this, compared to a small assortment randomly in vanilla.

The plot of the game is the same, all of the new content like pup quests, all the extras with elemental crystals in the WOR, and the hard superbosses and dungeons are built around the main plot and story points. If you know where to find them you can do them, but not needed to finish the game. A lot of them are pretty fun! Pub quests have you killing enemies someplace, selling a rare item, delivering something and more and you can find them in the towns with pubs in the WOB and WOR. The character outfits quest starts when you hit the WOR and finish a specific pub quest. After that when you perform certain deeds you get a new outfit related to or unrelated to FF6, with many from previous FF titles! You can get Celes as Beatrix from FF9, Mog as a Tonberry, Squall, and more! The outfits aren’t just for show once some provide new stat bonuses and when they’re the lead character on the world map the music changes. The side quests along are essentially a love letter to the entire Final Fantasy series!

Along with the new content there’s new events in the WOB and WOR, some of them are how you get the ultimate ability for some heroes like Cyan and Sabin. There’s also one involving Bannon and other inhabitants of Narshe in the WOR. After you get the airship, be sure to look around places you’ve been already cause you can fight 3 of the Espers to gain them for your party, but lose the ability to get 2 of them if you forget about them and hit the WOR. The Collection and Achievement Rooms in the beginner House in Narshe will house any rare items you find along the game, and any achievements like “use x ability 100 times” and the sort. Somewhere you can find the 12 sealed weapons from Final Fantasy 5!

Items, gear and Relics have been rebuilt also, and your items screen now holds 2 columns of everything you’re hoarding throughout the game. Gear and Relicis were redesigned and some new ones added, and Relics actually show the buff they give when equipped. You’re going to need it with some of the new bosses, superbosses, locations and very special guest fights along the way! Some of the locations of the strongest items are in spots you wouldn’t normally go, it’s best to explore every piece of land and island in the WOB and WOR. Speaking of nes bosses and superbosses, they’re tough and you’re likely die often till you figure out their patterns. I mentioned this with my FF4 Ultima review and it holds true here: think of the new bosses (especially the Espers) and superbosses as puzzles you have to know when to attack, when to heal, when to buff or debuff. Worth mentioning also the final battle with the corrupted Esper Statues and Kefka is not a joke.

When you’re finished with T-Edition there’s a new game+ of sorts! Patch your T-Edition rom with the EX hack for more superbosses and additional content!

This hack is incredibly well done and great and was worth the long wait until Tomato translated it all! Only negatives I can think of is the amount of additional stuff to do (either finding it on your own or reading the readme file) can be overwhelming. The additional superbosses may not be everyone’s cup of potions either, seeing how they’re built as puzzles to solve and defeat, including the Esper fights to gain their help. I’m not big on hard hacks or tons of superbosses, but seeing how there’s those players who do enjoy them (and seeing how I learned about puzzle superbosses playing FF4 Ultima) I figured I would mention it as well.
